With the building of the Soo Line Railroad in 1903, the local station was named Vergas. According to recollections of several local senior residents, and a former Soo Line station agent, the name was one of four in the "V" series used to designate Soo Line sleeping cars that traveled between Minneapolis, MN & Winnepeg, Manitoba. The other three were Viking, a Soo Line station west of Thief River Falls, MN, and Velno, and Venus to become the names of two small Soo Line Railroad sidings in North Dakota.
